Biotechnology : Applications and Advantages Biology is a very broad scope of studies which deals with the study of living organisms. The technological processes and applications of the science of living beings for the benefits of mankind is called Biotechnology. We can also understand the reason for specific characters of a living being, its growth and development at DNA levels. Cloning : Biotechnology news and research have proved that, with modern DNA technology, the genes of organisms can be replicated and new species can be prepared artificially in labs. This enables us to eliminate certain unwanted features and also imbibe certain required characters in the duplicate organism. The first duplicate or a cloned mammal was a sheep named' Dolly ' and was prepared in 1996. Gene Therapy : An application of genetic engineering which involves providing therapy to genetic diseases and disorders. Few genetic disorders like night blindness, baldness, male infertility, hemophilia and diseases like cancer which are caused due to gene mutation can be rectified (cancer only in early stages). By exactly pin pointing the defects and causes in the genetic structure, disorders can be rectified even at embryo levels. Agriculture : plant species can be artificially prepared suiting the needs. The features of different species can be combined together to eliminate all the unwanted and weak qualities and select only the best qualities. For instance, a cotton variety 'A' is more yielding but very disease prone; 'B' is very disease resistant cotton but low yielding. Only the best characters of both, i.e. disease resistant and high yielding can be chosen. Industrial : Certain bio-utilities of microbes and bacteria have been exposed to the world have proved to be of great benefit. Few microbes are known to break up petroleum based compounds in specific environments. They are used in petroleum manufacturing industries as well as in scenarios like oil spill in oceans.

Certain plant species are discovered which are known to act as excellent bio fuel with increased efficiencies and least ecological impact. Advantages of Biotechnology: Genetically Modified Food: also called GM food and products are the improved varieties of organic species. GM rice, brinjal, cotton, rubber and many others are in the markets which are able to meet the requirements of vast human population. Biotech has become a boon to the medical field. Breaking the barriers of human limits; diseases and disorders find appropriate cure to a great extent. Biotechnology news and research show that it is used immensely in industrial applications to improve processes and produce better goods.
