Mobile Internet Technology
Mobile internet is a common term for accessing wireless internet services through portable devices like tablets, mobile phones etc. The recent developments in the Smartphones and tablets segment have brought about significant improvements in the working of mobile internet.
Evolution of Mobile Internet :
Second generation mobile technology became widely accepted among the commoners in the 1990s. This was the time when the concept of mobile internet became practically popular. 2G generally relies upon GPRS mode of data transfer service.
It stands for General Packet Radio Service and is a medium level internet service transferring data on an average of around 100 kbps.
Though GPRS is meant for transfer of any kind of data like SMS, MMS and so on, it is significantly used for accessing internet services through WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browsers.

Recent developments in Mobile Internet:
The evolution of Third Generation mobiles in early 2000s gave birth to newer and better technologies in data transfer methodologies.
This went hand in hand with the introduction of EDGE technology. EDGE was basically aimed at Enhanced Data Rates in transmission for GSM based networks.
Newer versions of EDGE like Enhanced EDGE offer much higher data transfer of up to 500 kbps and is often called 2.9G technology, though international unions have approved EDGE as a part of 3G in the internet service review.
One of the prominent features of the modern day mobile phones belonging to 3G and 4G families is the high speed mobile internet service. They are enabled with high speed internet access and deliver a minimum of 1 mbps broadband internet data transfer for 3G networks.
Technologies like HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access) can deliver on ground more than 20 mbps of internet service. These services with little enhancement is even considered 4G sometimes.
The 'LTE' (Long term Evolution) and 'LTE Advanced' are the other technologies striving for larger and faster data transfer.
Till date in the internet service review, few of the above technologies offer much higher services than expected within the 3G boundaries. They are yet to satisfy 4G technological norms but are more often called 4G services. The amount of data that can be handled at a time and transferred at faster rates of around 100 mbps with ease, depends on the radio band of spectrum chosen, signal processing and switching technology adapted.
Mobile internet finds numerous applications in daily lives of users. Browsing the internet and Emailing are the most common applications. Apart from that, checking flight, trains and bus timings, movie show timings and booking tickets are found to be very handy. Social networking sites are easily and more often accessed through mobile based internet services and this has become one of the largest applications of mobile internet. Mobile shopping through e-Commerce and mobile banking too have become very common applications. Featured Articles
